Sunday lunch menu Welcome! Nestled in the small and oh-so-pretty rural village of Great Horkesley, just a few miles from Colchester, the Yew Tree is a true step back in time with its roaring coal fires, cosy dining room and welcoming atmosphere. With its blonde thatched roof, climbing roses curling around the front door and original timbers, it looks exactly how a quaint country English pub should.
Dating back to the early s, the building has been a public house for centuries and its cobbled courtyard once acted as a meeting place for local cattle farmers. The Yew Tree is perfectly located for exploring the surrounding landscape.

The northern half is quiet, mostly along the sea wall, with tidal flats on one side and farm land on the other. The southern half is mostly along the beach, with the Blackwater Estuary on the left and beach huts and chalets on shore. The return journey crosses the pleasant recreation grounds and fields of Benfleet Marsh before returning to the ancient and isolated church of St Margarets just north of the nature reserve. A gentle stroll through farmland brings you to the 15th century parish church of St Andrews.
Finally, there is a long gentle descent back to the riverside and Clare. The walk continues through flat open countryside before a mile or two of easy towpath walking alongside the Blackwater Navigation. Ideal for a hot summer’s day.

Prehistory[ edit ] The gravel hill upon which Colchester is built was formed in the Middle Pleistocene period, and was shaped into a terrace between the Anglian glaciation and the Ipswichian glaciation by an ancient precursor to the River Colne. The Iron Age settlement was protected by rivers on three sides, with the River Colne bounding the site to the north and east, and the Roman River valley forming the southern boundary; the earthworks were mostly designed to close off the western gap between these two river valleys.
The main sites within the bounds of these defences are the Gosbecks farmstead, a large high-status settlement with associated religious site, the Sheepen river port and industrial area near the present location of St Helena School and the Lexden burial mounds, a group of barrows and cremation burials. At the time of this appeal in 43 AD, the newly enthroned Emperor Claudius was in need of a military victory in order to secure his shaky position with the military , and saw this call for help as the perfect pretext.
Claudius arrived with reinforcements, including artillery and elephants, leading the attack on Camulodunon. Caratacus fled the storming of the town, taking refuge with the Ordovices and Silures tribes in Wales and becoming a Welsh folk hero for his resistance to Rome.
